24/Three appointed to first plots on Greyfriars
South Midlands-based architects 24/Three will draw up plans for 85 apartments which it says will set a ‘benchmark’ for the residential-led regeneration of Northampton.
The ECF and West Northamptonshire Council-backed Greyfriars project will see an existing 1960’s multi-storey car park replaced by an 1,100-home mixed-use scheme, set to also include office and retail space, cultural destinations, and green public spaces.
A consultation was launched on the proposals in November last year, with planning applications expected to be submitted in the summer – with master-planners Howells saying the development will create a vibrant, dynamic new town centre and neighbourhood for Northampton.
24/Three have been appointed to design plot 1, which marks the first phase of the Greyfriars masterplan, delivering 85 apartments with active ground-floor frontages that support a vibrant, well-connected neighbourhood.
Located on the northern edge of the wider development area, the site plays a crucial role in mediating between the proposed new development and the existing residential neighbourhood to the north, according to 24/Three associate Leah Bingham-Frost.
“We are excited to be working with ECF and to take the first step in delivering the Greyfriars masterplan together,” she said.
“As a growing practice, it feels particularly important to be working on a project of such significance, that aligns with our values around placemaking, sustainability and wellbeing, and that’s right on our doorstep. We look forward to contributing to the long-term vision for Greyfriars.”
