Vistry gets go-ahead for Newcastle homes
The third phase of an affordable housing development in Newcastle-under-Lyme is now set to get underway, after planners approved an application on land near Cross Street in Chesterton.
A total of 39 homes intended for over 55’s will be built by Vistry on behalf of social housing group Aspire Housing, as part of the latest phase of the scheme, with nine bungalows completed in the first phase. Construction of a further 43 homes approved as part of phase two is currently under way.
The site was formerly home to around 20 maisonettes, demolished as part of a £20m regeneration plan for the area. An initial application for the proposed development of 71 supported living apartments was put forward for the site in 2022, but was later withdrawn in May 2023.
Dave Bradley, Managing Director of Vistry North Midlands, said: “This marks a significant step forward in bringing much-needed affordable housing for those in their later years to the area, creating a vibrant and sustainable community. We look forward to working with Aspire to bring this development to life and provide homes that cater to the needs of local people.”
Dan Gray, Executive Director of Place at Aspire Housing, added: “We are exceptionally proud to begin work on the next stage of our Chesterton regeneration, investing £20million into the local area.
“This third phase of the regeneration programme builds upon the exciting journey we started in 2018, when we first met with residents and put forward plans to transform the housing offer in the area.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the local community continue to grow and thrive as we break ground on this next phase and we’re extremely grateful to Homes England and Newcastle Town Deal for their contributions towards this programme.”
Designs for the scheme were developed by Pozzoni Architecture.
