Birmingham launches £980m road-building framework
Highways and infrastructure improvements to support Birmingham’s ongoing regeneration efforts could be worth almost £1bn, according to new framework documents published by the city council this month.
Up to 25 contractors could benefit from the huge highways and infrastructure framework, which has been put out to tender via the government’s online portal.
The eight-year scheme covers a wide range of planned works, from minor highway improvements such as road marking and pedestrian or cycle-path upgrades, to large-scale infrastructure projects.
The framework has been split into five distinct contract lots, structured to accommodate different project sizes and scopes:
-
Lot 1: up to £200,000
-
Lot 2: between £200,001 and £1,000,000
-
Lot 3: between £1,000,001 and £10,000,000
-
Lot 4: above £10,000,000
-
Lot 5: Utility works related to capital infrastructure, with no upper limit on project value
The estimated total value of the framework is up to £980 million — about £1.176 billion including VAT — with roughly £640 million of that earmarked solely for Birmingham projects.
Contracts are expected to be awarded in March next year.
