Capital&Centric unveils latest vision for St Georges
Plans to build almost 400 homes on a former Wolverhampton Sainsbury’s are set to move forward, after developer Capital&Centric launched a public consultation on its regeneration proposals.
Last month, the city council signed off on a masterplan for the regeneration of the 5-acre former supermarket and historic St George’s church site, which has been vacant since Sainsburys quit for new premises at St Marks in 2015.
Capital&Centric, which signed a heads of terms agreement with the local authority in July to develop the site, is plotting 370 homes alongside a food hall for local independent businesses, public squares and green courtyards, alongside places to work and study.
A planning application is expected to be submitted to the city council before the end of the year.

The scheme is the latest foray into the Midlands for the traditionally Manchester-based developer, which has also worked on schemes in Stoke-on-Trent, Buxton, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Northampton over the past three years.
The developer is hosting a drop-in event on 16 July to give residents, businesses and community groups the chance to get a first look at the emerging vision, have a chat with the team and help shape what comes next, according to Martin Crews, development director.
“We’re looking forward to meeting more of our future neighbours and hearing what people think. St George’s has been sitting empty for too long and we’ve got a real opportunity to create something special here, but the best ideas often come from the people who know the area best,” he said.
“So, whether you’re excited about more homes, greener spaces, independent food and drink, or just curious about what’s happening on the site, we’d love you to come along, grab a brew and have a chat.”
Councillor Stephen Simkins, City of Wolverhampton Council Leader, added: “Capital&Centric have an excellent track record in delivering complex urban regeneration schemes and this is a chance to deliver much-needed homes alongside events and public spaces, shops and amenities, creating opportunities for our communities and enhancing lives at the heart of the city.
“I would urge people to go along to the event, take a look at how the proposals are shaping up for St George’s and have a say on the future of what is set to be a transformational neighbourhood in our city centre.”
The consultation takes place at Lupo Lounge on Thursday, 16 July between 3pm and 7pm, and closes on Monday, 3 August 2026.
