Green light for 179 apartments in former Jewellery Quarter factory
A plan to build 179 new apartments on a former Birmingham industrial site have been given the go-ahead by city planners this week.
The residential-led build-to-rent scheme, which also includes 4,200 sq ft of commercial space intended for creative companies, will be constructed across two sites on the edge of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, including the Mott Street Industrial Estate, which will be demolished to make way for the redevelopment.
The development will also see careful refurbishment of the historic Nightingale Works building, a former cardboard box factory on Great Hampton Street, along with construction of a publicly accessible pocket park facing Great Hampton Row.
The development was unanimously waved-through by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee on Wednesday, 23 October, having been recommended for approval.
The Nightingale Works and Mott Street site form part of a wider scheme of developments for the Great Hampton Street area by Cordia, which describes itself in supporting documents as “a development company that is taking a long-term interest in regeneration in the City”.
The firm broke ground on the first building in its by-to-rent portfolio at The Lampworks, a 148-unit residential scheme nearby, in May last year. The firm’s 156-home redevelopment at Gilders Yard also backs onto the application site.
“Mott Street and Nightingale represent the next step in transforming this historic part of Birmingham into a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive neighbourhood,” said András Kárpáti, chief executive of Cordia UK.
“By restoring heritage buildings and introducing high-quality new homes and community spaces, we aim to create a safer, more pleasant environment for residents while enhancing the area’s unique character.
“This project perfectly reflects Cordia’s philosophy of building for the future while respecting the past.”
The proposals were prepared by Associated Architects, Dyer and Glancy Nicholls Architects. Phase 2 acted as planning consultants for the scheme.
Documents and proposals relating to the application can be viewed on the council’s planning portal using reference 2024/06837/PA.
