Houses plan for warehouse destroyed by blaze

The site of a former industrial building in Wolverhampton could become up to 60 homes, under plans lodged with the city council by Birmingham-based Stonebond Properties.

The three-acre brownfield plot on Craddock Street in Whitmore Reans was once home to the Grasshopper Babywear clothing factory, a building which was destroyed by a huge fire in December, 2021.

The site has lain vacant for the past five years, but could now be set for an housing development, according to an application lodged this week – with around 25% of the properties set to be classed as affordable housing, if the scheme is approved.

“Primarily the intention has been to create a high quality development which sits well along Craddock Street, respects existing neighbours and provides a sense of place for new and existing communities,” said a planning statement submitted with the proposals.

“The dwellings have been designed to meet the requirements of a diverse range of residents’ needs. Proposed are a range of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses and maisonette units of various sizes.

An online residents consultation was held at the end of last year, which Stonebond says the final scheme has “benefitted considerably” from.

“The comments from all parties have been carefully considered and the design proposal has been adapted to take these comments into account,” the statement adds.

A number of smaller industrial buildings still present on the site could also be demolished to make way for the scheme.

The project team on the development includes architect Roberts Limbrick, planning consultant RCA Regeneration, Brindle & Green(Landscape, Environment & Ecology, Arboriculture), M-EC Consulting Group (Engineering), Magna Transport Planning Ltd, Focus Consultants, and ASL Environmental.
