Housing Plus secures £6.4m grant for Shropshire plans
More than 200 affordable homes will benefit from a funding boost from the West Midlands Combined Authority, including an £18m development at William Farr House in Shrewsbury.
The former Shrewsbury and Telford NHS brownfield site is currently being redeveloped as 76 extra care apartments by Housing Plus Group, which also bagged just over £6m from Homes England for the scheme last year.
A total of four sites will receive £6.4m from the combined authority’s Social Housing Accelerator Fund, with developments in Telford and Gobowen also set to benefit.
The £40m fund launched last year by West Midlands Mayor, Richard Parker, is intended to unlock development of around 1,000 affordable homes across the region.
“Securing £6.4 million of West Midlands Combined Authority funding is a major boost for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin and demonstrates the strength of our partnership with Mayor Richard Parker and the WMCA,” said Wayne Gethings, group chief executive at Housing Plus Group.
“This investment will enable us to deliver 205 much-needed social rent homes and ensure more local people can access safe, secure and affordable housing.”
Housing Plus Group’s development of 67 homes on the former Glebe Street flats site on Wellington High Street is included in the allocation, as well as Southlands Avenue in Gobowen, alongside another unnamed site in Shrewsbury.
The group says the four schemes form part of ambitious plans to build 3,500 homes across the county over the next five years.
