MIA eyes up Ladywood police station housing scheme

A total of 137 new homes could be built on a Birmingham brownfields site, as part of a joint deal with housing association Midland Heart.

Birmingham-based MIA Property Group snapped up the 0.9-acre former police station site in Ladywood in August last year, having acquired the neighbouring plot – once home to a social club – around six months prior.

The developer has now entered into a subject-to-planning agreement with housing association Midland Heart to deliver a new 137-home affordable scheme across the combined 1.4 acre site off Ladywood Middleway in Birmingham.

Plans are expected to land with Birmingham City Council within the next eight weeks.

The two-storey former police station closed in 2025, with operations relocated to neighbouring Edgbaston, part of a cost-cutting plan intended to contribute to savings of around £50m for West Midlands Police.

Eamonn Colman, Land and Investment Director at MIA Property Group, said the firm was delighted to be working with the housing association on the scheme.

“This is an important development for Birmingham, and the deliverance of 137 affordable units goes some way to helping the housing pressure in the city,” he said.

“We have worked hard in partnership with Midland Heart to design well-planned and attractive homes, with residents at the centre of our approach. MIA are also very grateful for the support given by advisors, Architectural Design Consultancy, and to agents Avison Young.”

Midland Heart says, if approved, the scheme will contribute to its wider housing delivery strategy, which aims to deliver 2,250 new affordable homes across the region over the next five years.

Joe Reeves, Deputy Chief Executive at Midland Heart, said the agreement is a “positive step” in its long-term plans to increase the supply of affordable homes across Birmingham.

“Ladywood is an area where demand is high, and this development will play an important role in meeting that need,” he said.

“Most importantly, it will create well-designed homes that offer local people greater security, stability and the chance to build their lives in a place they can feel proud of. We’re pleased to be working with MIA Property Group to bring this forward.”

Global commercial real estate advisor Avison Young acted on behalf of the developer, MIA Property Group.

Joe Williams, Director at Avison Young, added: “We’re pleased to have unlocked this deal for MIA Property Group and to be supporting the delivery of much-needed affordable homes in Birmingham.

“This project represents a strategic and sustainable reuse of brownfield land, and through close collaboration with MIA and Midland Heart, we are enabling the delivery of 137 high-quality affordable homes that will bring long-term benefit to the local community.”
