Three GP surgeries set for replacement under Burntwood plans

A new health hub could become the centrepiece of a mixed-use development on Milestone Way, alongside an 80-bed care home and new sports facilities, under proposals put forward by Staffordshire County Council.

The “modern high-quality” GP surgery is earmarked for part of a 9-acre playing field next to Burntwood Leisure Centre, set to provide a more permanent base for three existing GP practices.

A care home and three sports pitches are also included in the hybrid proposals, described as a collaboration between Staffordshire County Council, NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board and education support firm Entrust.

Plans submitted this week show a predominately two-storey clinic building arranged around a central courtyard, with comprehensive facilities including consulting rooms, treatment rooms and a large waiting area totalling 18,000 sq ft.

Local healthcare services intended to be replaced include Salters Meadow Health Centre, a temporary facility on the Burntwood Leisure Centre site, and the Darwin branch practice in Chasetown.

The care home element of the scheme has been submitted as outline only.

“The health centre is intended to replace and improve existing local healthcare facilities and support the relocation and consolidation of GP and clinical services, including Burntwood Health and Wellbeing Centre, Salters Meadow practice and Darwin Medical Practice, Chasetown,” said a supporting statement.

“The masterplan for Burntwood North has been developed as a care-led mixed-use arrangement, with the proposed health centre forming a key detailed element within the north-eastern part of the wider site.

Entrust Property Services are architects for the scheme, while Newcastle-under-Lyme based Knights have provided planning services.
