Speller Metcalfe hires first non-executive chair

Mark Castle will join the regional contractor’s board in January, bringing 40 years industry experience to the role.

Castle has held senior leadership positions in the UK construction industry. As well as a stint serving as chair of UK Build, he has worked at Wates Group and Mace, where he worked for 19 years as chief operating officer and then non-executive director.

He currently chairs Eleco and Triangle Fire Group, and is a NED on Taylor Wimpey’s plc board.

Speller Metcalfe, which is headquartered in Malvern with a further base in Wolverhampton, said that the appointment marks an important milestone in the firm’s journey, strengthening governance and supporting ambitions for long-term, sustainable growth.

Projects include delivering the £15.7m expansion of Stratford-upon-Avon School for Warwickshire County Council, and the redevelopment of Kidderminster’s Piano building, while the current workload includes the overhaul of Worcester’s Scala venue.

Managing director James Speller said: “Mark brings with him outstanding experience and a deep understanding of our industry that will help shape our strategic direction and enhance the forward-thinking culture that defines our business.”

Castle’s appointment follows a year in which the firm reported a £3.4m pre-tax profit on sales of £162.4m. He said of the business that “the company’s reputation places it at the forefront of the industry, and I’m pleased to be joining at such an exciting point in its growth story”.
