Under the hammer: £2m council land sales slated for February
Four parcels of local authority-owned land will be heading for property auctions next month, as Birmingham City Council continues with sell-off plans.
Early entries for an auction due to be held in early February include a 2.6-acre plot of brownfields land on Weston Lane, opposite an Amazon distribution centre in Tyseley, set to fetch in excess of £1.3m, and a half-acre plot near Birmingham Airport – up for a guide price of £300k.
Also up for sale is an “irregular shaped parcel of land” near Park Circus in Aston, set to fetch around £400k, and a smaller plot to the rear of several properties on Handsworth New Road, advertised with a guide price of £75,000.
The authority has sold off more than £60m worth of its £2.4bn estate since 2024, including the Bordesley Green Wheels site which sold for over £30m, and is now is set to be redeveloped as a £2bn sports quarter for the city.
Europe’s largest local authority effectively declared itself bankrupt in 2023 following a double-whammy projected overspend figure of around £87m for the 2023/24 financial year, coupled with an equal pay claim estimated to hit as much as £760m.
The four parcels of land will go under the hammer at Bond Wolfe’s online auction, starting at 8.30am on Thursday, 5 February.
Also included in the auction is the former Oak Trees Day Centre in Balsall Common, set to be sold off by Solihull Borough Council and marked with a guide price of around £175,000.
Further details on all properties and land included in bidding are available from the auctioneers.
