Conversion moves forward at former Birmingham police HQ
Work to convert a former police headquarters building in central Birmingham to 59 apartments is now under way, with a sales launch planned at the end of the month.
Stripping-out works have now begun at the 1930’s-era former police headquarters on Steelhouse Lane near Snow Hill, marking the first step in its transformation into a new housing scheme by Bunnywell Homes, set to be called Priors Gate.
The building has been used for offices since West Midlands Police quit the building in 2017, but will now be converted into 54 one-bedroom and 5 two-bedroom homes under plans which were approved by Birmingham City Council in January.
Completion is scheduled for September 2027.
The building will be carefully restored, refurbished and repurposed for residential use, securing a sustainable future for the previously-vacant landmark building – according to Joshua Steeples, co-founder of The Agents Club, which has been appointed as exclusive sales partner for the launch of the scheme.
“Opportunities to bring a building of this character and history back to life are incredibly rare, particularly in such a central Birmingham location,” he said.

The site adjoins the grade two-listed former Victorian Steelhouse Lane custody facility, known as the ‘Lock-Up’ and in use as a police museum, on the corner of Coleridge Passage.
BPN Architects have created designs for the scheme, with the professional team also including Flow Consult, Castledine Environmental, Groundsure, and Gemini Planning.
“There is a real difference between a typical new-build apartment scheme and a project like Priors Gate,” added Mallam Grant, co-founder, The Agents Club.
“This is a building with history, scale and architectural depth, and that gives it a unique position in the market. We are delighted to be working alongside Bunnywell Homes on a launch of this quality and significance.”
Priors Gate will officially launch at the end of May, with further details and sales events to follow in the coming weeks.
