Nottingham eyes up 44 flats at ‘underused’ parking garages
The city council has lodged plans to demolish more than 50 individual storage units to make way for a four-storey housing block in Bulwell.
Under the proposals, lodged by Halsall Lloyd Partnership on behalf of Nottingham City Council, 44 apartments will be built on a 35,000 sq ft plot on Colston Road – which the city council says will provide a “meaningful contribution to the affordable housing needs provision in Nottingham”.
The £5m proposals were approved at a meeting of the city council’s executive board in May last year, which considered earlier plans for the site which included 32 flats.
Nottingham has around 10,000 people on its backlog for social accommodation, and in 2023 the city council identified six sites it wanted to bring forward for development to ease pressure on waiting lists and temporary accommodation budgets, including the garages at Colston Road.
The scaled-up scheme is primarily made up of one-bedroom flats, with two larger, two-bedroom properties also included in the plans.
In its application, the city council said the garages are no longer fit for use due to the “dimensions of modern cars”. A total of 30 parking spaces are set to be retained under the new scheme.
Designs for the application have been provided by Halsall Lloyd Partnership. The project team also includes e3p, GIA, and Rebecca Peace Arboriculture.
