Clegg starts work on £18.8m Leicester estate revamp

City council-backed plans to build 50 affordable homes at Stocking Farm, in the north-west of the city, are now under way.

Leicester City Council and Levitate Architects lodged proposals for the development of Stocking Farm estate’s neighbourhood centre in 2022, promising to create a new residential community at the heart of the Stocking Farm area.

Clegg Construction was appointed to the scheme by Leicester City Council in July, and has now moved begin demolition of vacant buildings on the 3.4-acre plot, with the first homes on the development expected to be completed by mid-2028.

The approved plans include demolition of the Healthy Living Centre and Community Hall to make way for the scheme, with two single storey retail units and the single storey Best One, Post office and Social Club building already knocked down.

A 19th century farmhouse is being retained as part of the £18.8m development, and is set to be converted into six supported living apartments, with a further 16 supported living properties also set to be created in the grounds.

A link road will also be constructed to connect Marwood Road with Packwood Road as part of the scheme, while existing pedestrian links between the new homes and shops will also be improved.

Deputy city mayor Cllr Elly Cutkelvin, who leads on housing, economy and neighbourhoods, said: “We are committed to investing in our council estates and local neighbourhoods, and Stocking Farm presents a fantastic opportunity to deliver lasting improvements that will benefit residents for generations to come.

“It’s exciting to see work now under way on site, marking another significant milestone for this ambitious regeneration project. The development will provide much-needed new council homes, bring underused land back into productive use, and create a more attractive and vibrant neighbourhood.

“With Clegg Construction now on site, we are taking another important step towards transforming this part of the city and delivering real benefits for both existing and future residents.”
