First phase completed at £20m Shropshire retirement village

Telford-based McPhillips has handed over the first phase of the scheme in Newport, including 40 apartments and a restaurant and bar.

Work on the Sundew Court project, which is being built for Untold Living, began in August – set to deliver 61 apartments and 16 bungalows alongside a range of leisure facilities on the edge of the Shropshire town.

Described as the first project of its kind in the county, the development has been delivered using modern methods of construction, enabling it to be completed 40% faster, according to the firm. A topping-out ceremony was held at the building last November.

Work continues on a second block of apartments and the final set of bungalows, with the project set to be completed in early 2027.

McPhillips director Chris Walker said the handover marked a “proud moment” for the McPhillips team, and a “milestone” for Newport.

“There is a national shortage of good-quality homes for older people and we won’t close that gap by building the way we always have. Using Modern Methods of Construction on this project has allowed us to build faster, with less waste and less disruption for neighbours, without compromising on quality. Sundew Court really shows what can be achieved across the later living housing sector

“Every home here gives someone a better choice for later life and frees up a larger home for a family in the town. We look forward to completing the rest of the site.”

The purpose-built independent retirement community which features the Onsite Happy Quail restaurant and bar, library, hairdressing salon, a multi-function room, communal areas and around 40 apartments has now been handed over to Untold.

The scheme was designed by Gaunt Francis, and project managed by Total Project Integration.
