A scheme to link-up city bus and rail services with cycling and walking routes is set to be completed this year, according to Herefordshire Council.

Work on a £10m transport hub, currently under construction in Hereford city centre, got under way last year, with Telford building firm McPhillips appointed to the scheme in April.

Cranes have been brought onto site this month to start work on a striking central canopy feature, which the authority says will provide an attractive and welcoming arrival point for people coming to explore the city and the wider county.

Andrew Dunham, McPhillips contracts director, said: “We’re excited to be starting work on the canopy. This will form a striking visual feature and will really transform the transport hub into a welcoming gateway for Hereford.

“Our team is working hard to ensure the structure is installed to the highest standards, and we’re on track to deliver this important infrastructure project for the city. It’s rewarding to be part of such a significant investment in Hereford’s future.”

The transport hub is part of a near-£20m investment of government Levelling Up Funding, also part-funded by £3.5m from Herefordshire Council and £1m of Active Travel Measure funds.

Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Philip Price, said the start of work on the canopy was a milestone for a project that will significantly improve how people arrive in and move around Hereford.

“The transport hub will create a more welcoming, accessible and sustainable gateway to the city, supporting public transport, active travel and the local economy, while respecting the historic setting of the station,” he said.
