Morro teams up with council for Bilston regeneration

A planning application has been submitted for the first council homes to be built as part of a major regeneration programme in Bilston, which will see ageing properties replaced with modern, energy-efficient housing.

The Upper Bradley Regeneration Scheme will begin with a pilot development on Wilkinson Avenue, where existing “T-Block” properties are proposed for demolition to make way for a mix of new homes.

Subject to planning approval, Morro Partnerships will deliver the development on behalf of City of Wolverhampton Council.

The council says its Upper Bradley scheme forms part of a multi-million-pound, citywide strategy to refurbish or replace 4,100 ageing homes built using non-traditional construction methods.

The existing T-Block homes were constructed between 1927 and 1939 but have suffered from a range of structural problems, including failing structural elements, exposed and corroding steel and poor thermal efficiency.

Councillor Steve Evans, City of Wolverhampton Council deputy leader, said: “Our priority is to deliver good and affordable homes for local people in well-connected neighbourhoods, and this programme demonstrates the council’s commitment to ensuring that for every resident.

“The mix of homes has been informed by feedback from affected tenants, with each one allocated its own parking and a private garden. The proposals also offer a high-quality neighbourhood that complements the existing estate.

“With the current rising cost of energy, it is important we also improve the energy efficiency of any poorly performing council-owned housing.”

The application follows several months of site investigations and preparatory work, with the Wilkinson Avenue pilot intended to help inform potential future phases of the regeneration programme.

These could extend to properties in Baker Road, Chettle Road, Crane Road, Jordan Place, Martin Road, Pugh Road, Walter Road and Wells Road.

Designs for the scheme have been developed by Pegusus Group.
