Plans approved for Derby theatre’s £10m overhaul

Plans to fully refurbish the Guildhall Theatre have been given the thumbs up, marking a major step towards bringing the historic venue back into use.

The grade two listed building has been closed since 2019 after problems were found with its roof and auditorium ceiling.

Derby City Council submitted renovation plans in July for the £10m project, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, which will see the theatre repaired and transformed into a modern, accessible venue while retaining its historic features.

Plans for the theatre include a new downstairs café bar, improved toilets and accessibility, a rear extension housing a goods lift and a remodelled balcony with better seating and views.

“The Guildhall has served the people of Derby for generations and is an integral part of Derby’s cultural heritage,” said Cllr Nadine Peatfield, leader of Derby City Council.

“The approval of the planning applications brings us a step closer to bringing this iconic building back into use.

“With the help of £10 million of Government funding we’re taking the opportunity to create a high-quality venue that will serve our communities for generations to come and be something we can all be proud of.”
