Speller Metcalf tops out £20m Malvern Theatre scheme

Contractors working to turn a Great Malvern venue into a world-class creative arts destination have reached a milestone, after starting work in January.

Earlier this year, Malvern Hills District Council launched plans to remodel the main auditorium into a 240-seat studio theatre, alongside new workshop spaces, and accessibility improvements to the Forum Theatre.

Work is due to be completed in November 2027.

“We’re delighted to have reached another important milestone at Malvern Theatres as the facility continues to take shape,” said Mark Hudgeon, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe.

“As a local Malvern-based contractor, we’re especially proud to be helping deliver a project that will bring so much to the town and wider community for years to come.”

The project is being led by Malvern Hills District Council in partnership with Malvern Theatres and Malvern-based contractors Speller Metcalfe. Design work has been carried out by the renowned theatre architects Burrell Foley Fischer.

Cllr John Gallagher, leader and portfolio holder for resources at Malvern Hills District Council added: “Progress on the transformation of Malvern Theatres has passed a crucial stage and the major preparatory work, essential in all big projects, has been achieved. The structure is now ready to build out the exterior and interior claddings, so creating one of the largest multi-venue arts complexes in Europe.

“The project is on track to complete by November 2027 enriching and widening the participation in the arts. We look forward to the completion of this unique and elegant building set in the beautiful gardens of Priory Park, contributing to and enhancing the cultural lives of our communities”.
