Plans submitted for 1,300-home Martineau Place
Sixth Street and Henley Investment Management have lodged an application with Birmingham City Council for one of the city’s key regeneration sites.
If approved, the scheme for Martineau Place could see 1,300 homes built alongside 280,000 sq ft of office and retail space, earmarked for the existing 2.7-acre shopping centre site between Corporation Street and Bull Street.
Sixth Street and Henley acquired the 300,000 sq ft shopping centre site in 2021.
The proposals form a central pillar of the “Birmingham Central Heart” regeneration project showcased by the city council in Cannes earlier this year, with Martineau Place directly opposite one of the city’s other key regeneration plots at the former Rackham’s department store.
The Central Heart vision will support regeneration of the area between Cathedral Square and Curzon Street Station, and has the potential to accommodate up to 5,000 homes and 8,000 jobs.
Earlier this year, a consultation was launched on the proposals for Martineau Place, with a spokesperson describing the scheme as a “vital catalyst for regional transformation”.
Sixth Street and Henley say designs for the scheme draw on the area’s historic character, with more than half the site set to become public space, with gardens, public squares, and planting alongside improvements to Union Street to create a greener, more welcoming environment.
The project team includes EPR (architect), Newmark (planning), Opera (project management), and Marca Strategy (consultation & engagement).
A decision on the scheme is expected from Birmingham City Council next year.
- Plans and documents relating to the application are awaiting validation by Birmingham City Council’s planning department. A planning reference will be added to this story once it becomes available.
