Barjane submits plan for 420,000 sq ft Ansty delivery hub

Plans for a large logistics warehouse have been submitted to Rugby Borough Council, set to become a regional distribution centre for delivery firm DHL Supply Chain.

Barjane International wants to build out the 420,000 sq ft storage and distribution warehouse on a 30-acre plot of farmland off Hinckley Road, near Ansty, and just off Junction 2 of the M6.

DHL say their nearest facility at Coventry Crosspoint, less than a mile away, could hit full capacity as early as next year due to the firm’s expanding operations in the West Midlands, describing the need for more warehousing as “pressing”.

The firm, which employs around 1,700 people in the Coventry area, says it has an “operational need” for the building to be completed and occupied by 2028-2029.

If approved, the proposed development would act as a strategic expansion to its existing Coventry Crosspoint operations, which focus on the fashion and beauty sectors alongside other omni-channel retailers.

The applicant says the proposed development would provide high-quality workspace prepared specifically for use by DHL, but also “consistent with the requirements of modern logistics and distribution accommodation”.

The site currently sits within Green Belt land surrounding Coventry intended to prevent the city’s urban sprawl, but Barjane is seeking to have the parcel reclassified as Grey Belt after commissioning its own assessments of the site.

“The Grey Belt Assessment concludes that the site is distinct from the edge of Coventry, and its development would not be perceived as sprawl associated with Coventry,” they said in a planning statement.

“It is not agreed that the development of the site would result in an incongruous pattern of development that would weaken/fill the gap between Ansty and Coventry as suggested by the council.”

PRC Architecture & Planning have provided designs for the scheme, while Quod provided planning consultancy.
