Broad Marsh student plan edges forward

Plans to build more than 300 student flats close to Nottingham’s landmark redevelopment have moved forward following a successful request to the city council.

Peveril Securities and Sladen Estates say the scheme to redevelop the four-storey Hanson House, along with the next-door “Big City Tyres” warehouse, could form a key component of Nottingham’s wider city centre revival.

A consultation on the proposals was launched in October, with 329 studios earmarked for the site following the planned demolition of the two buildings on Carrington Street and Collin Street in Nottingham city centre.

Last week, the city council said the 12-storey scheme would not require a full environmental impact assessment, paving the way for a planning application to be put forward “imminently”.

The site falls partly within the Nottingham Canal Conservation Area and both buildings are locally listed, however Historic England have confirmed that they would not raise objections to the scheme based on evidence provided, according to the developer, who describes the emerging development plans as a “significant opportunity” to add to the city’s regeneration ambitions.

The Edwardian-era Hanson House is currently vacant, once home to the Hanson Chinese Restaurant and supermarket, which has been closed for more than a decade.

“The applicants intend to develop the site for purpose-built student accommodation, to support the wider regeneration aims for this area of the city. The project will be undertaken in partnership with a funding institution and operator, discussions with whom are at an advanced stage,” said a statement submitted with an EIA opinion request in February.

“Alongside meeting the strong demand for well-managed student accommodation in the Nottingham, the scheme will offer a comprehensive range of shared amenities – including study and quiet rooms, social lounges, exercise facilities, cinema and gaming rooms – as well as an enclosed roof terrace providing views across the city.”
