Padel centre will be ‘one of largest in Birmingham’

Plans to convert a disused former warehouse into a round-the-clock indoor sports facility have been approved by city council planners this month.

Applicant Dome Leisure lodged plans in November last year to create an 8-court padel complex at a former delivery distribution warehouse on Flaxley Parkway, in Stetchford.

Dome says it plans to create an “inclusive” padel and social club for east Birmingham, which it says will provide a welcoming third space for players of all ages and backgrounds, and will include a community café and sports lounge for socialising before and after play, as well as co-working and networking spaces.

The development, described as one of the city’s largest padel clubs by the applicant, will be housed in a 29,000 sq ft former warehouse and will operate round-the-clock on all 365 days of the year.

As part of the proposals, 5,000 hours of free or subsidised court time will be laid on for schools, youth organisations, charities, community groups, and targeted health programmes.

“The applicants concept is to blend sport, leisure, and community, offering not just courts, but a local asset. Acting as a hub for local residents and padel players across East Birmingham, creating a welcoming community built around sport, friendship, and wellbeing,” said a planning statement put forward with the scheme.

“The proposal seeks to combine a commercially sustainable padel operation with a not-for-profit community and wellbeing mission, Dome Leisure Group will create a welcoming, affordable, and inclusive hub that encourages active living, social connection, and local pride.”

In a report, Birmingham City Council’s planning officer admitted that the change of use for the former warehouse would result in a loss of employment land on the city, but said the site provided a “negligible contribution” to the city’s employment land supply – adding that it had been marketed for industrial purposes for 12 months without success.

MSC Planning provided advisory services for the application.
