Runways at East Midlands set to close for upgrades
The region’s second busiest airport is set to close for several days during the winter to carry out major infrastructure work, as part of a £120m investment programme.
Upgrades at the airport will include a work on one of the main taxiways used by heavy cargo aircraft, and a redesign of the central apron area, used to park aircraft overnight.
Planned improvements to the central apron will create space for an extra four aircraft to park up – a move which will support “growing airline operations” in the East Midlands.
Other work set to take place during the closures includes upgrades to electrical substations, general maintenance of the runway, taxiways and aprons and upgrades to hydrant and drainage systems.
According to bosses at the airport, carrying out the upgrades during daylight hours will allow for the work to be completed with less disruption to passengers and cargo operations.
The runway will be closed on 17 December, 7 January, 14 January, 21 January, 28 January, 4 February and 11 February.
East Midlands Airport’s Asset Development Director Brian McCoubrey said the work work enhance the airport’s operational capabilities and “future-proof its airfield for years to come”.
“These winter works are not just about maintenance – they’re an investment in the airport’s future, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital hub for passengers and freight across the UK and beyond,” he said.
“By investing in its taxiways, aprons and lighting systems, the airport is reinforcing its role as a key regional hub and ensuring it remains competitive, resilient and ready to meet the demands of modern aviation.”
