Sandwell completes Tipton public works scheme
A £1m project to improve Owen Street has been completed, with resurfaced roads and pavements, brighter streetlights, and improved public transport facilities now in place.
The Tipton scheme is part of a regeneration project backed by £20m of government Levelling Up cash, which includes 70 affordable homes currently under construction on Union Street.
The work was completed by Telford-based contractor, McPhillips, who were appointed to the scheme in February.
Cllr Ray Nock, leader of Sandwell Council, thanked the community for their patience while works had taken place.
“We are committed to supporting jobs and boosting our high streets and town centres. Now these works have been completed we encourage people to come along and see what businesses in Tipton have to offer,” he said.
“We thank everyone for their patience and understanding during these works. We also thank our contractor McPhillips for working closely with the community in Tipton throughout the project, supporting local jobs and providing valuable apprenticeship opportunities to give real-life industry experience.”

The completion of the project on one of the town centre’s busiest shopping areas comes after McPhillips were selected for two local authority frameworks last year; the £180m Black Country Highways Framework, and a £100m transport framework in Herefordshire.
Paul Inions, McPhillips managing director, added: “The Owen Street project is a scheme that’s created real opportunity, with three apprentices gaining hands-on experience and a site team drawn entirely from the local area.
“That local benefit, alongside the finished scheme itself, is something we’re very proud to have delivered for the people of Tipton and Sandwell Council.”
