Torsion breaks ground on Tipton flats build
A regeneration scheme which will see 55 apartments built in Tipton is officially underway, following a ground-breaking ceremony at the Union Street site.
Leeds-based Torsion Construction will build two new blocks of houses as part of a £20m regeneration project launched by Sandwell Council for the area, which the authority says will improve safety and access to the shopping precinct and canal walkway for pedestrians.
“We’re delivering 55 high-quality, energy-efficient one- and two-bed homes that meet local need. These homes are practical, well-designed and will bring real benefit to the community and the council,” said Torsion’s managing director Ed Wootton.
The scheme is Torsion’s first-ever public sector housing project.
Sandwell Council also says it’s now on the lookout for a construction partner for a separate regeneration scheme for 15 new apartments, also on Union Street, which was granted consent in May.
Wider plans for Tipton put forward by Sandwell Council include a reduction in the number of retail units in the town, which the authority says will better reflect the demand for retail space.
A number of tree planting and public realm improvements are also planned as part of the regeneration.
Councillor Kerrie Carmichael, Sandwell Council Leader, added: “With more people coming to live in the town centre and the improvements to public spaces, our aim is to boost footfall and support our Tipton businesses and traders.
“Work starting on site represents a major milestone for the project, which will set a new benchmark for the quality and sustainability of affordable apartments in the Sandwell.”
