Wates appointed to build Swadlincote civic offices

Work is set to begin this summer on a £59m civic and leisure building in South Derbyshire, around six weeks after the project got the go ahead from council planning officers.

Surrey-based Wates Construction have now been appointed as principle contractors to the scheme, following what the local authority described as a competitive procurement process.

Plans put forward by the council in February for the former Cadley Hill Colliery site include a three-storey office building and a replacement leisure facility, which would feature a four-court sports hall and a swimming pool, with a fitness suite and multi-purpose studios on the first floor.

Councillor Robert Pearson, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said: “This was a thorough and competitive procurement process, with Wates Construction coming out distinctly as the successful bidder. They presented a high-quality bid, showing a huge amount of experience, having worked on similar projects.

“Wates’ commitment to ensuring their projects deliver not just quality, but a scheme that represents good value for money and social value for local communities, helped them to stand out.”

Wates will be working alongside the South Derbyshire Council’s appointed architects, CPMG Architects, and wider consultant team, which includes Chord Consult, Hexa Consulting, Cadence Projects, Coreus Group, and Ares. CarneySweeney provided planning consultancy.

Mark Jones, Operations Director at Wates Construction added: “We’re excited to partner with South Derbyshire Council to realise their vision for a landmark leisure and office facility.

“Our ambition stretches beyond the physical construction of a building, we also aim to create a lasting legacy, delivering spaces that support communities and drive long-term social and economic value.”

The new facility is anticipated to open in 2028.
