Approval for 220 houses near Shrewsbury stadium
Persimmon’s plans to build more than 200 homes near a football stadium in Shrewsbury have been given the green light by Shropshire Council.
The housebuilder lodged details proposals for land off Thrower Road near Meole Brace in November 2025, a site within Shrewsbury’s south urban extension off Oteley Road which had been granted outline permission July.
A total of 226 houses will be built on the 22-acre site, 91 of which are earmarked for affordable housing.
Residents lodged nine objections to the scheme during the consultation period earlier this year, with objectors airing concerns over traffic and infrastructure for the area, which has seen large-scale residential and industrial expansion over the past decade.
Shrewsbury Town Council and ward councillor Cllr Vicky Moore also raised objections to the scheme, which were swatted aside by the council’s planning department.
“Where is the added infrastructure for these houses?” wrote Cllr Moore.
“The schools, the doctors in the area are already at capacity and can’t cope. Oteley road and meole brace roundabout are bad enough as it is, without the potential [for] 500+ cars. The land was never meant to be for residential use.”
However in their report, the council’s planning officer said the scheme would have “no significant implications” on the areas traffic network.
“The principal of development of up to 226 dwellings and the impact on the access road and the highway network was considered when the outline permission was determined,” they wrote.
As part of the development, Persimmon will contribute £1.7m towards local education through Section 106 funding and a further c.£540,000 through the Community Infrastructure Levy towards local infrastructure and services.
Lee Perry, Technical Director for Persimmon Homes West Midlands, said: “We’re pleased to have secured approval for these new homes in Shrewsbury.
“We’ve worked closely with officers throughout the process and look forward to delivering a well-designed development with green space and homes people can be proud of.”
