Black Country transport interchange takes shape

Construction work on Dudley’s replacement bus and tram station hit a major milestone this week, as steelwork was completed on the building’s main structure.

The transport hub, which will replace the town’s ageing former bus station, forms part of the Midlands Metro extension to Dudley which is expected to be completed next year. A second phase of the 11km extension project will see tracks laid to Brierley Hill by 2028.

The interchange forms part of a £1bn regeneration of Dudley town centre, and is being built by Taylor Woodrow under contract from Transport for West Midlands.

Jo Shore, director of delivery with TfWM, said: “We’ve worked hard to keep disruption to a minimum and would like to thank local businesses and residents for their patience throughout the construction.

“Crucially, the Interchange is taking shape and will soon offer an accessible, welcoming transport gateway that will seamlessly connect Dudley to the wider West Midlands via both bus and Metro.”

The current bus station is the oldest major bus station in the West Midlands, constructed in 1986 and the jumping-off point for passengers on 420,000 bus departures every year.

Transport for West Midlands say the new facility will double the current bus capacity in Dudley town centre.

Outline planning permission for the scheme was granted in 2019, and designs and visuals for the building were released earlier this year.

Dudley Council cabinet member for economy and infrastructure Cllr Simon Phipps said: “The interchange is a key aspect of our regeneration programme for Dudley, connecting light rail and bus services together in the town centre.

“We are incredibly excited to see the progress that is being made on the construction and we look forward to seeing it in use next year.”
