Riverside scheme included in Tamworth showcase

Three flagship potential regeneration projects are included in a pitch to potential investors from Tamworth’s borough council.

A potential ‘activation’ project along the River Anker and the seven-acre Gungate regeneration are part of a “Tamworth place prospectus” launched this week, which the local authority says will showcase the borough as a place to invest, develop and do business.

More than £40m has been spent regenerating the Staffordshire town, including projects at St Editha’s Square, Town Hall Place, Castle Gateway, and the Elizabeth Bradford Business Centre, backed by around £21m from the government’s Future High Streets fund.

Now, Tamworth Borough Council is setting out a number of significant opportunities for future investment, including potential schemes at Ankerside, Gungate and Marmion House.

The seven-acre Gungate site is pitched as a strategic regeneration site less than half a mile from Tamworth railway station. Soft-market testing began earlier this year for the local-authority owned site, with an emerging vision set to include a residential scheme alongside potential leisure, hotel, workspace and other uses.

Ankerside, also owned and managed by Tamworth Borough Council, represents a major opportunity to consider the future of one of the town’s largest sites, with potential for a more diverse mix of retail, leisure and residential uses and stronger connections with the River Anker, Castle Grounds and wider town centre.

Marmion House, a council-owned site in the heart of the town centre, is also being explored as a residential opportunity, with feasibility and option work already undertaken and further market engagement planned.

Ankerside, Gungate and Marmion House each have the potential to play an important role in the next phase of the town’s development, building on the substantial investment that has already taken place.
