Knighthead chief exec Tom Wagner recovering from stroke
Football chairman and Birmingham Sports Quarter figurehead, Tom Wagner, will step back from day-to-day operations while he recovers from a medical incident, Birmingham City FC has confirmed.
The 56-year old American, a co-founder of investment firm Knighthead Capital which now owns 96% of Birmingham City, is now in recovery after receiving immediate treatment for a stroke, according to a statement from club chief executive, Jeremy Dale.
Wagner, who took control of Birmingham City in 2023, has been a key figure in the launch of the club’s £2bn sports quarter plans, set to revitalise the Bordesley Green area of the city.
“Birmingham City Football Club Chairman Tom Wagner recently suffered a stroke. Thanks to rapid medical intervention, he received immediate treatment and is now receiving excellent care. We are pleased to share that he is making a good recovery,” said the statement, issued this morning (11 February).
“While he will be stepping back from day-to-day activity for a period of time to focus on his recovery, Tom remains closely connected to the club, and we all look forward to welcoming him back.
“Birmingham City Football Club is incredibly important to Tom and to the entire Knighthead team. Their commitment to the club is unchanged, and our plans and operations continue as normal under strong leadership.
“We appreciate your continued support and ask that you respect Tom’s privacy during his recovery.”
