Leicester unveils plan for £3.5m city centre ‘green link’
A row of council-owned commercial buildings could be demolished to make way for a £3.5m walkway in the heart of Leicester, under fresh plans unveiled by the city council.
The proposed link would create a “substantial” green space connecting Green Dragon Square with St Martin’s Square, with added paved areas for street food vendors, and a children’s adventure park.
Costs of the Maber-designed scheme have been placed at £3.5m, with more than £1m set to be provided by central government funding.
“This new scheme gives us a wonderful opportunity to complete the link from Town Hall Square through to St Martin’s Square and towards Leicester’s Old Town,” said Leicester City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby.
“It is also going to bring more much-needed green space to the heart of the city centre, as well as a place for families to rest and play.”
The city council expects to submit a formal planning application over the next fortnight, with a November start date already pencilled in, subject to receiving approval for the scheme.
Work is expected to take around 12 months to complete.
