McPhillips collects engineering gong for £4.3m square
A ‘standout’ public park built on the site of an abandoned former Woolworths store in Kidderminster has been named Midlands project of the year by civil engineering association, CECA.
Telford contractor McPhillips scooped the award in the £3m to £10m category, around six months after completing work at Talbot Park in Kidderminster.
The project is part of a £45m regeneration programme for the Worcestershire town, with the park set designed to create a footpath link to the 150-home Lion Fields housing development site.
The project was part of Wyre Forest District Council’s wider transformation programme, funded through the Government’s Future High Streets Fund, and three former shop units were demolished to make way for the development.
“Talbot Park presented a complex scheme, with technical and logistical challenges, due to buried structures, complex blocks left from previous demolition works and steep site gradients,” said managing director, Paul Inions.
“The team had to demolish several buildings including a derelict former Woolworths store – and the fact it was a busy town centre location made it extra challenging, which makes the award and the outcome even more commendable.
“Public realm projects like this matter because they change how people experience their town centre on daily basis. Congratulations to all those involved in the project on a well-deserved award.”
