Derby selected to lead UNESCO cities programme
The East Midlands will sit at the forefront of a United Nations backed programme for sustainable city development, after Derby was chosen to head up a global initiative.
The University of Derby will lead co-ordinate the efforts of 12 UK cities participating in UNESCO’s “learning cities” programme, a global initiative aimed at promoting lifelong learning and sustainable economic development.
Launched in 2013, cities involved in the global network include Beijing, Hamburg, Glasgow, Shanghai and Swansea, who previously led the UNESCO UK Learning Cities Network.
According to UNESCO, learning cities are “key drivers” of sustainable development through a commitment to promote green and healthy environments, and support decent work and entrepreneurship.
Professor Rhiannon Jones, Head of Civic and Communities at the University of Derby, who will chair the group, said the appointment, which followed a competitive tender process, was a “significant honour” for the city.
“Learning City membership recognises the University of Derby’s outstanding commitment to making education accessible for all and developing skills for everyone both inside and beyond the classroom,” she said.
“As the city and county’s only university, we take our role in supporting Derby’s economic, social, cultural, and environmental prosperity seriously.
“Derby has a rich history of success across these areas, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge and also learning from others in the network.”
