Lidl eyes up Ross-on-Wye store near A40 junction

German food discounter Lidl has lodged fresh plans to build a Herefordshire store, which it says is “materially smaller” than a previously rejected scheme.

Under an application received by Herefordshire council last week, a 12,000 sq ft store would be built on unused green fields near the A40 in Ross-on-Wye – if planners decide to give it the green light.

A total of 113 parking spaces are also included in the outline plans.

In 2019, the retailer put forward proposals for a larger store around half a mile away at Wolf Business Park, which was turned down by the committee against the recommendation of the councils planning officers, due to concerns over the impact on town centre trade.

Having switched their attention to Starling Road, one junction further up the A40, Lidl says it’s latest plans will head off the authority’s concerns over the previous scheme.

“Existing food stores in Ross-on-Wye centre are congested; trading well in excess of their benchmark turnover, particularly the Aldi on Brookend Street. This indicates there is demand and capacity for additional convenience food provision in Ross-on-Wye, particularly for a limited assortment discount operator,” said a supporting statement, submitted with the plans.

HTC Architects have created designs and Carney Sweeney supplied planning statements to support the application.

Documents and plans relating to the application can be found on Herefordshire’s planning portal using reference: P261045/F
