Makeover plan for Nottingham office block approved

Homes England-backed proposals to partly restore a vacant city centre commercial building have been given the green light by city council planners.

Under the proposals put forward last month, Severns House on Middle Pavement and Middle Hill will be given a makeover as part of plans to bring the vacant premises back to life for community uses.

The site is next door to the former Broadmarsh shopping centre, which is currently being demolished to make way for a major regeneration scheme.

Facade treatment works to the building will include an art installation on the Middle Pavement side, with a wall and railings also built on the boundary of the car park and goods yard .

“Homes England are seeking to reuse the office building for a variety of community focused uses to bring interest back into this part of the city centre alongside the continued redevelopment of the former Broadmarsh site,” said an assessment by the city council’s planning officers.

“The existing Middle Pavement elevation is of limited architectural interest and the proposed introduction of weatherboard cladding will facilitate the placement of artwork bringing interest to this prominent corner on the edge of the Old Market Square Conservation Area.

“It is positive to see the site being re-used and the works to facilitate the re-use are generally small in scale and would not detract from the character or appearance of the site or wider Old Market Square Conservation Area.”
