‘More than 750 homes’ plan for brownfield fund
A fresh round of funding will be spent bringing derelict industrial sites back into use in the East Midlands under a new initiative spearheaded by the regional authority.
The money, allocated to the East Midlands Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund, will be made available as grant funding for housing developments, with hopes around 750 new homes will be built as a result of the initiative.
East Midlands’ regional Mayor Claire Ward said the funding, which totals £19.7m, could be used in a number of ways to bring forward new housing schemes, including the direct delivery of new homes.
Other activities which could benefit from the scheme include demolition and remediation programmes, infrastructure, and land acquisitions.
Ward says the homes delivered using the funding will form part of a target of over 100,000 homes planned to be built in the region over the next decade, outlined in the combined authority’s 10-year growth plan, launched earlier this month.
“Securing this funding marks another opportunity to transform communities in our region. Part of our vision for inclusive growth in the East Midlands is to build 100,000 homes – unlocking new, affordable, and modern places for our residents to live,” she said.
“Already, the Government is supporting our ambition and recognising our ability to deliver. These developments will bring brownfield land back into use, deliver high-quality homes, and create jobs for local people. This is about more than housing – it’s about building a stronger, fairer future for the East Midlands.
“I’m committed to ensuring that every new home built is part of a bigger story: one of opportunity, sustainability, and pride in place for the people of the East Midlands.”
A previous round of brownfield funding held in August 2024 saw over 50 applications received by the authority, which it says demonstrates the regeneration potential of the region.
To qualify for funding under the programme, all proposed developments must have planning permission in progress, and be in a position to sign a delivery contract by March next year.
