Walsall to work up £1.5m spending plan after cash boost
Walsall Council will develop spending plans for a raft of regeneration projects, after receiving fresh grant funding from central government this week.
The area is one of six local authorities across the country singled out for funding from the governments “Pride in Place” fund, aimed at tackling problems in some of the borough’s most deprived areas.
Schemes benefitting from the fund must fall into at least one of three categories, which include town centre generation schemes, new or improved public spaces and building and refurbishment projects for “underused” community assets.
“We are delighted to have been awarded this additional funding. The money will be split between a number of wards across the borough to provide tangible improvements for local people,” said Cllr Adrian Andrew, deputy leader at Walsall Council.
“The funding will cover improvements to parks and green spaces, grants for community organisations to improve their facilities and services and other place-based contributions towards projects aimed at increasing local pride, wellbeing, economic growth and community cohesion.
“I look forward to seeing the plans for this funding firmed up ready to deliver real improvements for local communities over the next two years.”
Walsall Council says it’s been consulting with voluntary and community sector organisations to decide where the funding could be spent, with the authority set to consult with local MPs and community groups as it begins to draw up a shortlist of schemes over the next four weeks.
The initial list of projects that will receive funding through the programme is expected in the coming months.
