Speller Metcalfe starts at £28m Atherstone leisure centre
Demolition work has begun on a major leisure centre redevelopment, marking the start of a scheme to transform sports and community facilities in North Warwickshire.
Speller Metcalfe was appointed as main contractor to the £28m Atherstone project earlier this year, after North Warwickshire had submitted a planning application for its proposals in February.
Published plans include a four-lane swimming pool and a 100-station gym and group fitness studios, along with a cafe and community spaces.
Contractors moved onto site to begin demolition earlier this month, with the project scheduled to be completed and re-opened to the public in 2028.
“We are delighted to have been appointed by North Warwickshire Borough Council to deliver this important project for Atherstone,” said Mark Hudgeon, divisional director for Speller Metcalfe, speaking after the firm was appointed.
“The new leisure centre will provide high-quality, modern facilities that support healthier lifestyles and bring people together. Our team is looking forward to working collaboratively with the Council and local stakeholders to create a facility the community can be proud of.”
Cllr Margaret Bell, North Warwickshire Council’s chair of community and environment board, said it was “fantastic” to see the project get under way.
“While many people will have fond memories of the former leisure complex, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for leisure provision in Atherstone and across the wider borough,” she said.
“We look forward to seeing progress continue as we move closer to delivering a modern facility that will benefit our residents and visitors for generations to come.”
DHA Planning provided consultancy for the scheme, with designs provided by GT3 Architects. The project team includes AtkinsRealis, Hadron Consulting, Desco, Hexa, and Oobe.
