Torsion Construction on the brink of collapse

The contractor has filed a notice of its intention to appoint administrators, a move that will impact a council housing development in Sandwell.

After weeks of speculation over its future, Torsion Construction, founded in 2015, is close to collapse despite posting record revenues for the year ended 30 June 2025.

Last year, Torsion recorded revenues of £164m, up from £117m in 2024, and a pre-tax profit of £800,000. Dividends of £539,000 were paid during the period, according to the company’s full accounts.

Despite a thin margin, the company’s auditor was positive about the company’s prospects in the short term. A statement in the accounts said: “We have not identified any material uncertainties relating to events or conditions that, individually or collectively, may cast significant doubt on the company’s ability to continue as a going concern for a period of at least twelve months”.

A little over a year on from the end of the last financial year, Torsion has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators – the step before formally instructing them – citing cashflow issues due to “exceptionally challenging trading conditions across the UK construction sector”.

Torsion broke ground on a scheme of 55 apartments in Tipton last October, having been appointed by Sandwell Council to deliver a £20m regeneration project on the Union Street site.

In an update issued by the firm in May, it said piling and foundations were under way on the western half of the plot, with steelwork “well and truly advancing” on the other of two planned apartment blocks.
