Former Wolverhampton college set for demolition
A former education campus in Compton is set to be knocked down, paving the way for the redevelopment of the 25-acre site for housing.
Agents Bruton Knowles have lodged an application with City of Wolverhampton Council to clear the vacant Paget Road campus, which has been earmarked for residential development following Wolverhampton College’s move to its new city centre plot.
The college vacated the 1960s-built site, in November as part of its long-planned relocation to the £61m learning quarter at St George’s.
Bruton Knowles has been marketing the site as a residential development opportunity since January.
The application seeks permission to demolish 12 buildings across the campus, with planning documents stating the works would take around three months to complete, creating a cleared development site while addressing ongoing management, maintenance and security issues associated with the vacant buildings.
The submission comes days after West Midlands Fire Service attended a fire at the campus. Six fire crews were called to the site over the weekend, with the service later stating it believed the blaze had been started deliberately.
Subject to planning approval, demolition work is expected to begin in late September.
