Lidl starts on store at former Wolverhampton meat factory
A 3.2-acre site in Parkfield is set to become a superstore and a 17 new houses in place of the now-demolished former FA Gills abattoir.
A plan to transform the plot, which ceased trading as a sausage factory in 2023, was put forward by Lidl last year and approved by planners at City of Wolverhampton Council in October.
Under the hybrid proposals, a 23,700 sq ft store with 110 parking spaces will be built on a corner plot bordering Parkfield Road and Birmingham New Road in the south-east of the city.
Outline plans for up to 17 houses were also included in the application.
Once opened, the supermarket will create up to 40 new jobs, the discounter says.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have successfully completed the demolition of the old abattoir buildings, and now look forward to commencing the construction phase of a new Lidl store,” said Joe Caunt, regional head of property at Lidl GB.
“This state-of-the-art store will create jobs, breathe life into an underutilised piece of land, and enhance local access to our quality, affordable offering.”
