‘Playful’ office plan for former Nottingham car park
Offices and collaborative working space could be built on a vacant site in Nottingham’s Lace Market area under plans put forward this week.
The three-storey building planned for the fenced-off plot on Woolpack Lane has been put forward by Nottingham-based Perrymead Estates, who say the development will form phase two of a mixed-use business and residential hub built on a neighbouring plot.
The first phase of the development at 15-17 Stoney Street was approved in 2023, with construction under way on a four storey extension to two former textile workshops which are set to become a mix of offices, apartments and ground floor retail space.
If approved, around 4,500 sq ft of office space would be created on a vacant site which was most recently in use as a car park.
The building’s modern design contains four floating “box” volumes above a glass facade, an up to date interpretation of the mix of established architectural styles in the area, according to documents supplied with the application by architect Marsh:grochowksi.
“The architectural appearance of the building has been conceived as a playful composition of volumes arranged around the courtyard, drawing inspiration from the incremental development of the Lace Market, where a rich urban character has emerged,” said a design statement.
“The proposal is to provide an improvement to the street scene of Woolpack Lane, screening the blank facades of the neighbouring properties at the sides of the site. It is proposed to be kept in a small scale, comparing to the surrounding properties, to be a better experience for the users and respecting the surrounding properties.”
Developer Perrymead has undertaken a number of successful regeneration projects of historic buildings in the Lace Market area over the past decade, including 3-4 Kayes Walk, 41-43 St Mary’s Gate, and Sutton Place.
