Steelhouse Lane station set for resi conversion

Plans have been lodged for 59 apartments at Birmingham’s former police headquarters under permitted development rights.

Working with BPN Architects and a professional team also including Flow Consult, Kent-registered applicant Steelhouse Lane Developments has filed its proposals with Birmingham City Council for the now-vacant site.

The site sits across from Birmingham Children’s Hospital, next to police museum, The Lock Up.

Although the building sits within the Steelhouse Lane conservation area, it is not nationally or locally listed. No external alterations are proposed.

Operations were wound up at the station, which is described in planning documents as in good condition, in 2017, with West Midlands Police bringing the site’s people and functions into its more modern base at Lloyd House, Snow Hill Queensway.

The redevelopment project, said BPN, “will ensure the longevity of this important building and presents a positive change for the historic environment”.

Designed by city engineer Herbert Humphries, the building was opened in 1933.

The proposals can be viewed on the Birmingham City Council planning portal, reference 2025/06786/PA.
