City launches search for ‘foodie market’ operator
A specialist food and drink venue could be heading for Wolverhampton, after the city council launched plans to create a food-hall style destination in the city centre.
As part of plans to boost its city-centre living offer to residents, City of Wolverhampton Council says it’s on the lookout for a company to run a “box space” style operation, part of what it says is a long-held ambition to create a “bold, modern space” where residents, students and visitors can eat, drink, and socialise.
Similar operations have sprung up in city-centres across the country over the past few years, with a council commissioned survey showing growing demand for food-hall‑style destinations, even while traditional food and drink businesses face tougher trading conditions nationally.
The authority has set aside up to £5.5m of capital investment to kickstart the project, which it says could attract up to half-a-million visitors each year, complimenting a raft of city-centre residential development schemes – including the £83m Smithgate development which got under way this year.
A precise location has not been named for the project, with several venues under consideration.
The council will formally launch its tender process next month, seeking an experienced operator with a proven track record of running successful box‑style venues and a “passion for delivering high‑quality, inclusive, community‑minded spaces”.
“We’ve wanted to bring a box space to Wolverhampton for a while, so I’m delighted we’re finally pressing ahead,” said Cllr Chris Burden, cabinet member for city development, jobs and skills.
“This is a chance to create something really special – somewhere that feels authentically ‘Wolves’, gives people more reasons to spend time in the city centre, and attracts visitors from across the region.
“This is about pride, energy and momentum. Alongside major investment like the £83 million Smithgate development, the transformation of The Halls and huge upgrades to public spaces, safety and lighting, this new venue will help make our city centre an exciting, vibrant place day and night.”
