Stand demolition paves way for £46m Edgbaston hotel
Work to build a 146-bedroom hotel at Birmingham’s iconic international cricket stadium is now under way, after two ageing stands were razed to make way for the scheme.
A redeveloped 3,200-seat stand will replace the 70-year-old Raglan and Priory stands, part of a scheme which will also see a Radisson Red hotel constructed at Edgbaston Stadium, along with improved spectator facilities.
The new hotel accommodation will include a rooftop terrace, pitch-view rooms with balconies, and rooms that can be converted into hospitality boxes with external terraces during high-profile cricket fixtures.
The proposals were backed by Birmingham City Council’s planning department in February, with a £17.3m loan from West Midlands Combined Authority supporting the scheme.

Construction on the hotel is expected to commence in early 2026, with completion scheduled in time for the men’s Ashes cricket fixtures in Birmingham during summer 2027.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said the project would improve a stadium which was “known and loved” by cricket fans around the world.
“This redevelopment, backed by our investment, means it will continue to play its role in keeping our region at the top table of international sporting events for years to come,” he said.
“Tens of thousands more fans and visitors will be able to flock here every year – bringing more trade for our businesses and, as a result, more jobs and opportunity for local people.”

The development forms part of the wider Edgbaston masterplan, a plan to transform the stadium into a multi-use sports, residential, commercial, and community facility. A £32m redevelopment of the South and West Stands was completed in 2011, with a redeveloped entrance area, car parking and the Edgbaston Residences build-to-rent complex completed in 2023.
Stuart Cain, Chief Executive at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “It’s scary to see seventy years of history disappear, but it’s important that we make sure Edgbaston remains one of the world’s best cricket stadiums and continues to evolve into an important community resource for those living locally and an economic asset for the city in general.
“The new hotel brings a much needed four-star facility to the city, supporting our aim of using sport to drive positive change through creating employment opportunities and bringing communities together to deliver economic growth.”
