Work to begin on Edition city centre scheme
Construction work on the first phase of a luxury Birmingham residential development will begin shortly, after building regulators gave plans the thumbs up.
Groundworks for the 581-home Edition Birmingham scheme, set to be built as two blocks close to Centenary Square on the site of the former Paradise Circus multi-storey car park, have been under way for several months.
Now, developer Sphere Group and sales partner Select Property say work will begin “in the coming weeks” on the 15-storey first tower, following gateway two approval from the building safety regulator.
Under new rules brought in under the Building Safety Act in 2024, work on developments which are deemed higher risk must be signed off by building control in three stages, known as gateways, and work on site cannot start until gateway two approval has been signed off.
A third stage, known as gateway three, must also be signed off prior to residents moving in to the buildings.
Thomas Taylor, managing director of Sphere Group, said: “The new Building Safety Act gateway two introduces some of the most stringent safety requirements in the world, making the UK a market leader and one of the safest places to invest. Securing gateway two approval is a major milestone and underlines our commitment to ensuring that Edition Birmingham is built to the very highest standards of safety and quality.
“The global demand for investment into Birmingham demonstrates that it’s a city of unmatched potential and opportunity. We can now look forward to starting work on Edition Birmingham in the coming weeks, bringing this world-class development to the city.”

Completion of phase one of the scheme, known as Park Residence, is now expected by 2027, with the towering 46-storey Centenary Tower set to follow as a second phase development by 2028.
Last month, the development was buoyed by the news that all 149 apartments in the first phase had been sold off plan prior to construction work getting underway on site.
Edition Birmingham’s designs were led by Weedon Architects with support from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). The development has financial backing from Eldridge Real Estate Credit, the real estate investing strategy of Eldridge Capital Management, and PGIM.
Adam Price, CEO of Select Property, added: “Birmingham has so much going for it, from a young and growing population to major investment in the city centre and high-growth businesses. That’s reflected in a strong property market. It’s a city on the rise and Edition sits at the heart of it.
“We’re really pleased with the appetite to own the property assets within Edition, with all apartments in Park Residence sold out and strong demand for properties in the adjoining Centenary Tower. Investors and owner-occupiers alike are keen to own a part of the most prestigious residential development in Birmingham city centre.”
