Birmingham Wickes set to be demolished for Lidl store
Lidl’s first store in Hall Green has been given the thumbs up by Birmingham City Council planners.
Under proposals put forward by the German retail giant in July last year, an existing Wickes DIY store on Stratford Road will be demolished to make way for a 24,000 sq ft food store.
A total of 120 car parking spaces will be provided as part of the scheme, and Lidl says around 40 jobs will be created by the development.
A report by the city council’s planning officers says the store, which follows the discounter’s standard layouts, would improve the appearance of the site, which has been home to Wickes since 1996.
The store is set to adopt Lidl’s latest designs, which they say will result in a high-quality, energy efficient building, with a glazed frontage which allows for the car park to be overlooked, intended to reduce crime and provides level access for customers.
However the store does not meet the criteria for BREEAM excellent standard, which the firm says is not “achievable or viable”.
“The form of the proposed building is functional, but not unacceptable in the context of the appearance of others in the immediate vicinity or the building to be replaced,” said the city council report.
“The proposed additional landscaping along the two road frontages and tree planting at the southern end of the site would help to ensure that the scheme adds to the overall quality of the area.”
The project team includes HTC Architects, FDA Landscape, Cora iHt, RPS, Carney Sweeney, DDA, Hoare Lea, and Obsidian Geo-Consulting.
