Sainsbury’s gets go-ahead for upgrades at former Homebase store

Changes to a former Sutton Coldfield Homebase which is set to become a £17m superstore have been given the go-ahead by Birmingham City Council.

The supermarket giant unveiled plans to buy up the New Oscott store as part of an acquisition of ten Homebase branches in 2024, around three months before the DIY giant collapsed into administration.

Plans for a major refurbishment of the store were approved in November last year, with a separate application lodged to increase car parking at the store to 126 spaces, along with some other minor changes including cycle storage, trolley shelters and an upgraded electrical substation for the store.

Both plans have now been approved, with the store earmarked for an opening date later this year.

“The front elevation, facing the car park, will be improved with dark grey cladding and improved entrance/exit lobby. Signage will be introduced, consistent with Sainsbury’s branding, which will be submitted to the Council under a separate advertisement consent application.

“Overall, the proposed external changes will enhance the appearance of the retail unit and will ensure that the site remains as a well-integrated part of the local retail landscape in the district centre.”

Documents relating to the application can be found on the Birmingham City Council planning portal under reference: 2025/05250/PA
