Derelict former Redditch school hits the market for £1m

An 11-acre former residential school will go under the hammer next month, as Birmingham City Council presses ahead with its £750m programme of asset sell-offs.

The 17th century-built former Skilts School on Gorcott Hill, Beoley has been empty since 2021, when the city council merged the special school to become part of Kitts Green Academy in Lea Hall.

Now, the main building and three former teaching blocks will be auctioned off on 10 September, with the auction expected to fetch in excess of £1m.

Access to the site is provided via a private road, which is included within the sale, according to Birmingham-based auctioneers Bond Wolfe.

Over the past three years, Birmingham City Council has pursued one of the largest local authority asset disposal programmes in the UK, driven by its financial recovery following a Section 114 notice issued in 2023.

A report produced in October last year showed the authority had achieved sales of around £320m, against a target of £750m which it plans to hit by the end of 2026.

“The property has remained vacant following its closure several years ago and now presents a substantial redevelopment or refurbishment opportunity, subject to obtaining the necessary consents,” said a spokesperson for auctioneer, Bond Wolfe.

“Constructed using traditional materials typical of the era, the property has been extended over time with more modern additions. The main building is not listed and is generally in poor condition internally and externally, requiring significant refurbishment.

“The site shows potential for such alternative uses through either the conversion of the existing building or new construction.”
